Update my details

Update questions

How long do I have to update my ABN details?

28 days from becoming aware of the change. There is no immediate penalty for being late, but out-of-date details mean ATO correspondence goes to the wrong address, and an ABN with stale details and no recorded activity is a candidate for the ATO's inactivity cancellation programme.

What does the $99 cover?

A registered tax agent checks the change against what the register currently holds, lodges it direct to the ABR, and deals with the ATO if anything is queried. It is $99 including GST, flat and tax deductible, with nothing taken until the last step of the form.

How long does the update take to appear?

Most changes are reflected on ABN Lookup within one business day of lodgement. A legal name change takes longer because the supporting document has to be verified first.

Do I need a new ABN instead of an update?

Only if the legal entity itself changes. Changing what you do, where you do it or what you call it is an update. A sole trader becoming a company is a different entity, so that needs a new ABN and the old one cancelled.

Can you update a cancelled ABN?

No. There is nothing to update while it is cancelled. It has to be reactivated first, and where you are still entitled to an ABN you will usually get the same number back. Our lookup checks this before you pay, and points you at reactivation instead.
