How long does it take to get an ABN? Minutes, or 28 days.

There are two queues: instant, and manual review. Which one you land in is decided before you hit submit.

Most ABN applications are approved the same day, often within minutes, provided your identity details match ATO records exactly. Applications that don’t match cleanly are referred to manual review, where the ATO’s service standard is up to 28 days. The single biggest factor: providing your TFN and matching your name precisely to ATO records.

What decides your queue

SituationLikely timeframe
TFN provided, details match ATO records, clean entitlement answersSame day, commonly minutes
No TFN providedManual review, up to 28 days
Name/DOB mismatch (middle names, maiden names, spelling)Manual review, up to 28 days
Previous refusal or cancelled ABN being re-appliedExtra scrutiny. Get it reviewed before lodging

How to stay in the fast queue

  1. Provide your TFN. It’s the identity anchor, applications without it almost always slow down.
  2. Match your name to ATO records exactly, including middle names, and using whatever surname the ATO last has for you.
  3. Answer the entitlement questions properly. “Am I carrying on an enterprise?” has traps for employees trying to invoice like contractors.
  4. Bundle GST/PAYG now if you’ll need them, a second application later is a second chance to stall.

This pre-lodgement check is exactly what our registered tax agents do on every $99 application, it’s why “same day” is our normal. Apply for an ABN online, or if yours is already stuck, call 1800 546 526 and we’ll tell you honestly where it’s sitting.

Common questions

Can I get an ABN instantly?

Often, yes. If your identity details (name, date of birth, TFN) match ATO records exactly and your entitlement answers are clean, the ABN typically issues the same day, frequently within minutes of lodgement.

Why is my ABN application taking 28 days?

It’s been referred for manual review, almost always because something didn’t match, a missing TFN, a name variation (middle names, maiden names, transliterations), or entitlement answers the system couldn’t auto-approve. The ATO’s service standard for review is 28 days.

Can I start working before my ABN arrives?

You can begin trading while an application is under review, but you can’t quote an ABN you don’t have, and without one, businesses paying you may be required to withhold 47% from payments. Getting the application right the first time matters more than starting it early.

Does using an agent make the ABN come faster?

An agent can’t jump the ATO’s queue, nobody can. What agent review does is keep you out of the slow queue in the first place, by catching the mismatches and entitlement traps that trigger manual review. That’s the whole speed advantage: same-day issue because nothing needed reviewing.

My application was refused: how long until I can reapply?

You can reapply immediately, but repeat applications get extra scrutiny, so fix the underlying issue first. This is a common point where people come to us: unpicking a refusal is included in the $99 service.
