Ride share ABN questions

Do I need an ABN to drive for Uber, DiDi or Ola?

Yes. Driving for a rideshare platform means you are running a business as a sole trader, not working as an employee of the platform. Every platform asks for an ABN during onboarding, and you cannot complete sign-up without one.

Do I have to register for GST as a rideshare driver?

Yes, and this is the part most drivers get wrong. The ATO requires anyone providing taxi, limousine or ride-sourcing travel for passengers to register for GST regardless of turnover. It applies whether you own the car or lease it.

That means the $75,000 threshold that applies to most businesses does not apply to you. You register for GST from your first fare.

Is ABN registration and GST included in the one price?

Yes. This application covers both the ABN and the GST registration for $99 including GST, lodged together so you are not filling in a second form later. The fee is tax deductible as a business expense.

How long before I can start driving?

Most applications are issued the same business day when your identity details match ATO records cleanly. Applications with mismatched or incomplete details can go to manual review, which the ABR allows up to 28 days for. A registered tax agent checks yours before lodgement, which is what keeps it out of that queue.

Can I get an ABN free from the government instead?

Yes, you can apply directly at the Australian Business Register at no cost. What you pay us for is review and lodgement by a registered tax agent, the GST registration handled in the same application, and someone on the phone if something goes wrong. If you would rather do it yourself, the ABR is the place to go.

What happens if I start driving without an ABN?

Beyond not being able to complete platform onboarding, businesses that pay you are required to withhold 47% of the payment if you do not quote an ABN, and send it to the ATO. There are limited exceptions, including where a payment is $75 or less excluding GST.

You would recover the withheld amount through your tax return, but you carry the cash-flow gap until then.

Can I use the same ABN for Uber, Uber Eats and other work?

Yes. One ABN covers you as a sole trader across all of your business activities. You do not need a separate ABN for each platform or each type of work.
