An ABN is free, it never expires, and it removes a 47% problem from every invoice you send to a business. Beyond that it is what lets you claim GST credits, register a business name, open a business bank account and hold a .au domain. The honest summary: if you are running an enterprise, holding one costs you nothing and not holding one costs you money.
The five that actually matter
business.gov.au lists what an ABN is for in plain terms. You can use one to verify your business to others when ordering and invoicing, avoid pay as you go tax being withheld from payments you receive, claim GST credits, claim energy grants credits, and get an Australian .au domain name.
Here is what each of those means in practice.
- You get paid in full. A business paying another business that has not quoted an ABN must withhold 47% of anything over $75 and send it to the ATO. Quote an ABN and that disappears.
- You can claim GST credits, once you are registered for GST. You cannot register for GST at all without an ABN, so the ABN is the gate.
- You can register a business name. ASIC will not register one without a linked ABN, so trading under anything other than your own legal name starts here.
- Banks will open a business account. Not a legal requirement, but every bank asks, and separating business money from personal money is the single thing that makes tax time survivable.
- You look like a business. Clients, suppliers and platforms check. An ABN on an invoice, verifiable on ABN Lookup, is the cheapest credibility available.
What an ABN is not
Worth clearing up, because these are the things people expect it to do and it does not.
| An ABN is not | What you actually need |
|---|---|
| A tax file number | Your TFN stays yours. See ABN vs TFN |
| A business name | Register the name with ASIC, attached to the ABN |
| A company | A company is a separate entity with its own ACN. See ABN vs ACN |
| GST registration | A separate registration, required from $75,000 turnover |
| A licence to trade | Trade licences and permits are state-based and separate |
Is it worth getting one if I do not have to?
Often yes, and the reason is that the cost side is close to zero. There is no application fee at the ABR, no annual fee, and no renewal. An ABN does not force you to charge GST, does not create a lodgement obligation by itself, and can be cancelled when the activity stops.
What it does create is a record that you were carrying on an enterprise from a particular date, which matters if you later want to claim deductions against that income.
The one caution: you have to be entitled to it. An ABN is for carrying on or starting an enterprise, and applying when you are not entitled is not a harmless bit of admin. The ABR runs entitlement reviews, and it says plainly that you may face prosecution or criminal charges if you apply for an ABN, register for GST and claim GST refunds when you are not entitled.
Where the benefit is smallest
- You only sell to individuals. No-ABN withholding applies when a business pays you. If every customer is a private person, that particular benefit does not arise, though the others still do.
- It is genuinely a hobby. Then you are not entitled, and the question is settled for you. Our guide on hobby or business covers the test.
- You are an employee. You are not entitled to an ABN for work you do as an employee, even if it is described as contracting.
Getting one
The application asks for your identity, your business structure, the date you started or will start, and a description of what the business does. Have those ready and it usually issues immediately. What slows people down is a vague activity description, which is common enough that we wrote a separate guide on the nature of your activity field.
Common questions
What are the benefits of having an ABN?
You avoid 47% being withheld from payments made to you by other businesses, you can claim GST credits once registered for GST, you can register a business name, you can open a business bank account, and you can hold an Australian .au domain name. It also lets clients verify you on ABN Lookup.
Does an ABN cost anything to keep?
No. There is no annual fee, no renewal fee and no expiry date. Applying at the Australian Business Register is free if you do it yourself. Our agent-lodged application is $99 including GST and tax deductible.
Does having an ABN mean I have to charge GST?
No. They are separate registrations. GST becomes compulsory once your GST turnover reaches $75,000, or immediately if you carry passengers for a fare. Below that you can choose, and choosing means lodging activity statements.
Can I get an ABN just in case?
Only if you are entitled to one, which means you are carrying on or starting an enterprise. Taking steps to start counts, such as advertising, buying stock or equipment, or quoting for work. Applying with no enterprise behind it is not harmless: the ABR reviews entitlement and can refuse or cancel.
Do I need an ABN if I only have a few customers?
Customer numbers are not the test. What matters is whether you are carrying on an enterprise, judged on things like repetition, an intention to profit, and whether the activity is organised in a business-like way.
Will an ABN affect my tax return?
Business income is reported in your return whether or not you hold an ABN. What the ABN changes is that payers stop withholding 47%, so the tax is settled through your return instead of being held by the ATO until you lodge.
